mizfits for cosette society

"Were there a fourth Grace named Melancholy, and were it smiling, she would have seemed that Grace."
—Les Misérables, Saint Denis, Book III, Chapter VIII

our history and purpose

I first became interested in Les Miserables when I saw the Tenth Anniversary Concert on PBS. I loved Cosette's character immediately. She was so innocent, sweet, and vulnerable. That is, until she grew up, put on a dull black dress, and faded into the boring background. Imagine my surprise when I finally read the book and found that adult Cosette wasn't as shrill and old as the TAC portrayed her. In fact, she was much like the child Cosette: innocent, sweet, and vulnerable. I came to like her better than the brave, oh-so-alone Eponine, and the doomed Fantine. I liked her child-like hope and strength. In the care of Jean Valjean, she blossomed into a intense, radiant girl. When I became a part of the on-line community of Les Misérables, I was surprised to see that Cosette was disliked, and sometimes vehemently hated by the majority of Les Miz fans. She was, according to many people, sugary sweet, ditzy, weak, ungrateful, and worst of all, she stole Eponine's guy! UNFORGIVABLE!! Believe me when I tell you that no character in Les Misérables (or nearly any other book) gets more undeserved flack than Cosette Fauchelevent. This site was created to dispel the many misinterpretations of Cosette's character, and to define the Cosette Victor Hugo really wrote.
